The Friends of Petersfield Heath were formed in 1999 from residents of Petersfield concerned about the future of the Heath. The previous land user was Petersfield Golf Club who gave up the site after many years of occupancy.
Petersfield Heath is registered as a charitable trust (The Heath Charity), with the Town Council as trustees. The Trust was set up to provide open access to the Heath for the recreational benefit of the local population.
The Friends of Petersfield Heath have three stated objectives
To preserve Petersfield Heath as an area of natural heathland, grassland, woodland and water for the enjoyment of all who use it.
To work closely with, and advise, Petersfield Town Council in the management of the Heath.
To undertake voluntary work where appropriate.
Current key projects are:
Planting new areas of heather
Constructing dead hedges to create habitat
Preserving the ancient barrows
Weeding and clearing areas of overgrowth of invasive plants
